Yes. AI VJ and all its core VJ features are free: no trial, no watermark, no account beyond Steam. It comes with free sample visuals, and the banner can be turned off for free.
Optional DLC visual packs, mostly $4.99 each with hundreds of clips, support development. Generating your own visuals with Creative Director uses paid commercial AI models, so that costs a little per video or picture.
No. AI VJ runs on Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit) only. There is no macOS or Linux version, long-term we plan to add these.
Minimum: Windows 10, 2 CPU cores, 4 GB RAM, a GPU with 2 GB VRAM and DirectX 11, and 5 GB of disk space.
Recommended: Windows 10 or 11, 4 CPU cores, 8 GB RAM, a GTX 1080 or better with 8 GB VRAM, an SSD, and 12 GB of disk space. The pre-rendered AI visuals run fine on modest laptops; the shaders are the GPU-hungry part.
AI VJ syncs to the beat through Ableton Link, which is supported by Virtual DJ, Rekordbox, Traktor, Serato and other popular DJ software. See the Ableton Link Sync tutorials for each.
You don't need DJ software at all though: AI VJ can estimate the BPM from line-in, a microphone, WASAPI, or your PC's own audio output, so it also works with Spotify, YouTube or a live band. See the Audio Sync tutorials.
No. The AI visuals are generated ahead of time and curated, which is why AI VJ runs on a laptop with a projector instead of a server farm. During your set they're played and synced to the beat, next to shaders, 3D models and Milkdrop presets that are rendered live.
You can also create your own AI visuals, even from your own pictures, with the Creative Director. Those are generated before you play them too.
Not at the gig. AI VJ can run in offline mode for 50 hours of actual use before it needs to reconnect with Steam once. See running offline. Only updating, installing DLCs, and generating new visuals with Creative Director needs internet.
Yes. Paid gigs, live and recorded, in private and public venues are fine, and so is recording, streaming and monetizing videos, with no separate commercial licence or revenue share. The one condition: recordings and streams must be part of a mix or performance, with music or sound, not the bare visual clips on their own.
Redistributing or reselling the visual packs themselves is not allowed. The Software and Visuals License has the full terms.
Yes. You can load your own VJ loops and videos (nearly all codecs; mp4 with H264 works best), pictures for beat-synced slideshows, 3D models (.glb, .gltf) that dance to the music, Milkdrop presets (.milk), and ShaderToy and ISF shaders. All of these sync to the beat and can be mixed with the included visuals across multiple layers. See using your own videos and the sections after it.
They're built for different people. Resolume is paid, professional VJ software for VJs who are experts and perform the visuals live, typically with a MIDI controller, lots of effects and (in Arena) projection mapping.
AI VJ is free and built for DJs who want great visuals out of the box, without a VJ, or complicated set-ups: it comes with a library of AI visuals, stays on beat by itself, can be hands-off during the show, and needs only a keyboard and mouse. The two still combine well: AI VJ can send its output to Resolume, OBS and other software over Spout.
Open the 'Visuals' menu near the top-right in AI VJ. Browse the unfolding menus there until you find it. Make sure you have not unticked it in Steam
Ensure port 20808 is open on both machines (disable Firewalls, AV, and VPNs to test), and make sure they're on the same network!
